In the country’s southeastern region, North Carolina has mountains, beaches, and a long history. In addition to Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, and the Atlantic Ocean, the state borders Georgia and Tennessee. North Carolina’s Kitty Hawk was the scene of the Wright Brothers’ first powered airplane flight in 1903. This achievement is honored today at Kitty Hawk with the Wright Memorial. North Carolina license plates also read “First in Flight.” in honor of the Wright Brothers. In addition to Chris Daughtry, Fantasia Barrino, and Clay Aiken, more finalists from North Carolina than any other state. Many jazz legends were born there, such as Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone, and John Coltrane. In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a man named Vernon Rudolph opened a small donut shop in 1937.
