Between December 1811 and February 1812, New Madrid, Missouri, experienced four of the largest earthquakes in North American history. “Show-Me State” was given to Missouri by Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver in 1899 when he declared, “I’m a Missourian, and you need to show me!” Valentine Tapley, a Missouri farmer who ran during Abraham Lincoln’s presidential campaign, vowed never to shave if Lincoln were elected.
