Kentucky joined the Union on December 15, 1861, at the age of 15. It is found in the southeastern United States. You’ll find forests, hills, meadows, rivers, lakes, and swamps in this scenic state. Horse racing, bluegrass music, fried chicken, and college basketball are all famous in Kentucky. Horse racing’s Kentucky Derby has been running continuously since 1875. Each Kentucky Derby horse is named after the first letter of the alphabet except for “X.” Thunder Over Louisville is the opening ceremony, and it features the largest fireworks show in the world! In 1934, Kaolin’s restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky, served what is believed to be the first cheeseburger. (A Denver restaurant patented it a year later.) And Kentucky Fried Chicken does originate in Kentucky! Colonel Sanders owned and operated the first K.F.C. in Corbin, Kentucky, which still exists today.
