Connecticut was one of the original 13 colonies and played a significant role in the Revolutionary War before becoming the fifth state. Connecticut has produced many “firsts” such as color television, hamburgers, phone books, Polaroid cameras, nuclear submarines, and helicopters. In Connecticut, the first-speed limit laws for cars were set in 1901. The speed limit was 12 miles per hour. Among the oldest public libraries in the United States is the Scoville Memorial Library in Connecticut. Richard Smith acquired 200 books while traveling in London by using donations from the community in 1771.
