Spanish explorers first explored Arizona in the 1530s, but it remained part of Mexico until the 1840s. After winning the Mexican-American War, the United States gained control of the land in 1848. Finally, Arizona was admitted to the Union as the 48th state in 1912. The Grand Canyon is probably Arizona’s most famous landmark. Only 17% of Arizona’s land is privately owned, despite being the sixth-largest state in the area. State trusts, public forests, and parklands, and Native American reservations receive the remaining amounts. Tucson and Phoenix in Arizona get sunshine 85% of the time, even though they are not called the Sunshine State. There is a 90% chance of sunshine in Yuma, Arizona.
